Beginner / Novice Essentials At the beginning of everyones wrestling career the core best practices are developed. Stance to maintain a position ......

Lesson #1 High Crotch The head outside single, or more commonly referred to as a High Crotch, is one of the more basic and used shots for a wrestler in general. First, take a good penetration step. Be sure to take a step, then down to the knee, then the next leg comes up to be a drive leg. Too often do the older kids skip that first step and just put their knee down. This is a sign of laziness and sometimes it works but it will always be hit or miss depending on who you're wrestling. The problem is you will always be further away if you don't take that first step. You'll get the leg you're after, but it'll be a lot easier to get extended. You want your hips to be on his leg when you're in the position to drive. You should aim to be pushing him backwards with your shoulder before you are done with your penetration step. In this drive position, your head is outside and you have a single, keep your hands wrapped around the bottom part of his leg (calf). This will make it harder for him to sprawl. If you start to get extended you have to scoot your knee to keep your hips under your chest so you don't get extended.

Lesson #2 High Crotch Defense & Crack Down The first high crotch defense can be very quick and easy. This is where our toe-touch drill really shines. This is a very skill and reaction time based move and takes years of practice to pull off against good opponents. When your opponent is taking a high crotch, or any other shot for that matter, you can move your foot out of the way by lifting your heel to your butt. This should be done if your down-block fails. It's is a simple action, yet very effective. You need to react to shots. We see all too often shots land with no reaction whatsoever. What will happen with a high crotch dodge is your opponent will end up just wrapping the bottom part of your knee. Your knee will be free to pop out and you'll have a split second to spin around, getting the takedown.

Lesson #3 Outside Singles & High Single After you get a High Single from a High Crotch, the ankle will be in your left armpit. You'll pull the knee down which will put his hands to the mat. When he comes back up you'll be able to do an Inside Trip on the free leg.

Lesson #4 Single Defense & Shin Whizzer This is a wrestling technique instructional how-to video from the neutral position teaching you how to get a take-down. This is a powerful form of a whizzer that can completely stop an outside single or low leg single in its tracks. With a traditional whizzer, we'll drive our opponent forward and grab our shin. Then we'll put as much pressure on our opponent's shoulder as possible so he can't regain any ground. This is a high level defense which you'll see used often within scrambles in college and high-school. It's imperative that we know how to use it and that we go for it whenever possible. Too often do our kids think that grabbing a far side power-half will work against an outside single. The sad fact is that it doesn't do anything to anyone half-decent past the age of ten. We really wish school programs would stop teaching kids to do this. As responsible wrestling coaches, we must teach techniques that work for the entirety of the wrestler's career, not give them a quick fixes. This is why we teach not to rely on headlocks, chin whips, etc

Lesson #5 Low Leg Singles This is when you attack the right (stage right) ankle with your right hand. You can attack either ankle obviously, with either hand too, but we'll be focusing on specifics to make things simpler. You will be on your hands and knees, right hand around the right ankle, wrapping the heel. You will use your left hand to stabilize yourself while putting your head on the inside of the knee. You will want to favor keeping your head on the inside of the knee, for all of the defense starts after the head slips between the ankles and the guy starts to attack over the body and scramble.

Lesson #6 Under Hooks & Over Hook The under hook is used constantly in the higher levels of wrestling, but still under-utilized with the young ones. It's very easy to go for, and gets you closer to your opponent than a traditional collar tie. It also gives you position over your opponent, or in this case, under. Your arm will go under your opponent's arm and then wrap above his shoulder, creating a good amount of control. This especially works well when you get an angle and move him around with your free hand either placed on the head or with a far wrist controlled.

Lesson #7 Two-on-one (russian Tie) The Two On One, often referred to as The Russian, is a very under utilized tie-up in the younger ages of our sport. It is more often seen in college than anywhere else. As always, if we can get our young ones to start doing this, they'll be years ahead of their peers. As you can probably get through the name, we're controlling our opponent's one arm with two hands. Both palm up, one is one the wrist while the other is holding the shoulder. This gives us a good angle to do a wide variety of shots. It can be part of Hand-Fighting and is not meant to be held onto for very long. With tie-ups, we feel you should use them as soon as possible, or move to the next one. This is often based on how our opponent reacts to whatever tie-up we currently have.
